How to install Books Online?

  • Hi all,

Unfortunately, I could not get Books online with my installation of SQL Server 2014. So I downloaded exe file from Microsoft site, which in turn unpacked a set of .cab file.

And now what I can do next? Each .cab file unzipped to .mshc and .mshi files, that I can't open, even web service could not suggest a program.

Was anybody able to install it? Please share advice.

    Thanks

  • In SSMS, click the Help menu, then click Manage Help Settings.

Click "Install content from disk" to install the files you downloaded manually.

You can instead click "Install content from online" instead of downloading the files manually.

  • If I click Help/Manage Help Settings, I receive an error "You do not have permission to modify content under the location specified for the help content store".

If I click OK, I am directed to a Help Library Manager where only an option "Choose online or local help" is available. If I click it, and then in Settings select "I want to use local help" radio-button, the OK button does not change to enabled color, it still stays with dimmed gray, so I am left only with "Cancel" option.

  • Please try running SSMS as an Administrator. You must not be logged onto Windows with an Administrator account.

  • Thank you very much! Finally I could install it.

But I have an impression that it's incomplete. In Index section, I tried lag, lead, last_value - it did not have them. I also tried sys. and it shows only one entry, while my 2008 B.O.L. has a lot more, maybe a hundred. For sp_ it also showed fewer entries than 2008.

  • Try the option "Install content from online" and see if there are any you're missing.

  • Thanks a lot!

    Now I have all B.O.L.

  • Double-click the MSI to start installation.

In the Open file dialog box, click Run to start the Installation Wizard.

Follow the wizard to complete the installation

  • Do you mean an installation file with extension *.msi ? I don't have one. I downloaded .exe file from MS site: SQLServer2014Documentation_August2014_EN.exe.

If I run it, it creates set of 12 packages with extension .cab , 5 .html files, by one of .mshs, .mshc, .mshi

Or MSI is another Microsoft installation program?
