SSRS 2012 - Multiple Servers

  • Currently, our group has SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on a server. Our server team has determined we need to upgrade our servers and the DBA team has determined that we are going from one DB server to three. This is not being done due to server load or the need to add servers, but simply because the DBA team wants to split functionality across three servers. For instance: the one server will only contain the database engine, another server will contain OLAP databases and the last server will contain SSRS. SSRS is not allowed to be housed on the same server as the database engine per their standards.

Having never installed SSRS in this fashion previously (I have always had it all on the same server), does anyone have any tips, installation guidelines, websites, etc. that could help on how to get this installed in this fashion? I have tried to Google this, but either there isn't much information out there, or my search criteria is not correct.

I am not sure if this is as simple as inserting the SSRS media and selecting there server where the database engine resides, or if there are a lot more "tweeks" that need done to get this working.

Thanks for any and all help you may provide

  • SSRS is independent from the SQL Engine. It does not have to be installed on the same Server as the SQL Engine. Just do a normal SQL install process on the Server and just Select REPORTING SERVICES when doing the install. This will install the necessary files for the Reporting Web Server, the URL, Manager etc. Once you go through the configuration of the Report Server you should be able to just create a connection to the Database and read the data to create Reports.
