Compatibility issue of SSRS 2008R2 with SQL Server 2014

  • Currently, Our database system runs with SQL server 2005. Reporting service is SSRS 2008 R2 version which has it's report server database in SQL server 2005.

Now, we are upgrading database system from SQL server 2005 to SQL server 2014

we were told that there is compatibility issue between database SQL server 2014 and SSRS 2008 R2.

Can anyone please advise me whether this is true

  • When upgrading files and programs, there is always a risk of running into issues such as incompatability or data loss. Hiring consultants or a consulting firm (I recommend www.sql-programmers.com) can help facilitate a smooth upgrade.

  • I think you should ask for more detail. It may not be supported but does it work? The only way to know the latter for sure is to set up some evaluation copies and to try it out.

If you asked Microsoft they have documentation https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157285.aspx which says SSRS can run on any SQL Server 2005 Standard and above database engine... up to the version of SSRS. So going further than that probably isn't supported but probably works (or possibly it doesn't work, maybe it has a version check when setting up a new database, you'd have to try to find out?)

If it works and you've never used the SQL Server CSS support team for anything (we haven't and have no idea how to) then it working is probably more important than whether it's technically supported or not.

With all of this said I'm surprised you don't upgrade SSRS. It hasn't seen many changes between the versions. Is it because of licensing?
