SQL 2005 On a Win 2003 R2 Cluster - SP4 Install failing

  • I'm installing SQL 2005 and SP4 on a Windows 2003 R2 Cluster (don't ask), and we had some issues installing SP4. These were related to the SQL Installer which had to be uninstalled and then re-installed. This was done by the System Admin, who then also installed the service pack, apparently successfully.

Now however the SQL Server Service won't start! The error I get is "Configuration block version 0 is not a valid version number. SQL Server s exiting. Restore the master database or reinstall"

I had hoped I could rebuild master, and initially I had issues because of permission issues on the system database files after they are replaced. I resolved this by setting permissions at the folder level.

Now the rebuild replaces master etc and stats and stops SQL Server, but it now fails with the error: "Failed to set registry settings for server network libraries. The action is SetDefaults. The error is 2 (The system cannot find the file specified)" The closes I've found on the net is "The error is 11001" which isn't helping.

Has anyone seen this before, or must I resort to doing a full install again?

Nothing in life is ever so complicated that with a little work it can't be made more complicated.
