SQL 2012: SP2 CU5 will not install

  • Hello -

I am in the midst of testing out a migration for SQL 2012 servers from SP1 to SP2, and am trying to get them to CU5, but am unable to do so. The highest I am able to get to is CU4 (11.0.5569).

Has anyone else seen this or run into this issue? I installed SP2 and then each individual CU (1 through 4), but 5 does not show any components to update, and just errors stating that there is nothing to update.

    Thanks in advance...

As it is a Cumulative Update, my guess is that your server doesn't have any of the affected features added from CU4 to CU5 installed

  • Awesome! Thank you!

  • I'm still a bit confused by this. Our install has MDS, SharePoint, and other pieces (as well as the database engine and SQL services), all of which are claiming to be addressed in CU5.

I guess it must just be very specific pieces of those named areas?

  • its very recent so could be a bug in it, but I have not heard that.

The updates are cumulative so you do not have to apply CU1 to 4 first, try going staright to CU5, or if you are not suffering from the errors the CUs fix, stay at SP2, (or CU4). I would personally feel safer with that anyway.

  • Hi george...

I tried that, but was not able too. I also found in one of Glenn Barry's blogs that there was the possibility of wiping out the securities from SP1 CU10 and CU11 (if you did not at least update to SP2 CU2). I didn't want to risk it, so I just ran SP2, and then all 4 CU's in order. Still not able to get CU5 to install though (I just get unselectable options when it gets to the components portion of the install).

  • you won't lose any security patches by applying just SP2.

SP2 includes up to post SP1 CU9, if you were at a later CU than that just applying SP2 CU1 will cover it. I would report this to MS, but you are probably giving yourself a problem you don't need to get into by trying to apply CU5.

  • Hi george -

Sorry - I meant 'fixes' when I said 'securities', but here is what I was referring to...

The initial release of Service Pack 2 (11.0.5058) does not contain the fixes from Service Pack 1 Cumulative Update #10 or #11. So, if you install SP2, you need to understand that you will lose those fixes unless you subsequently apply at least SP2 Cumulative Update #2.

  • ok, I see.

my research showed CU1 would cover it though.

  • Can you provide any links to share where it states that SP2 CU1 is all that is needed? I ask because if there is conflicting information out on this, I'd like to get it straightened out.

  • well I was sure I read it but cannot find it now. Old age I guess

Looks like it just covers CU10 from SP1 branch

and a few important ones from CU11

  • george, thank you! I did some searching as well after our last exchange here, and found some things from trusted sources that led me to the same conclusions you have shared here. Most (if not all of CU10), and portions of CU11. SP2 CU1 is fine, but SP2 CU2 to be safe (and in my case - CU4).

There really is no reason to not go to the highest Cumulative Update unless you are in the scenarios they discussed with AlwaysOn Availability Groups, but it still appears that CU5 has addressed that (I just cannot get it to install).

Thanks to all of you for the input!
