I tried

sp_RemoveDbReplication

and

ALTER DATABASE SET RECOVERY SIMPLE

Neither worked. Then I tried to right click on replication publisher properties, enabled the db in question as a publisher, hit OK, went there again and disabled, and it finally worked.
