Subscription Migration from SQL2005 to SQL2008 R2

  • I have 10 publications on my SQL2005/WIN2K3 server. There are about 40 Subscribers to all, each set up with anonymous merge replication.

I've built a new (SQL2008 R2/WIN2K8) server and need to migrate those databases and publications to the new server.

I have to do it in a manner that won't put all the subscribers out of business at once.

My first thought was to create subscriptions on the new server against the publications on the old and then create publications on the new server.

This would keep the new server DBs up-to-date from the old so I could migrate the clients one at a time. When done, I would kill the subscriptions between the new and the old.

It won't work due to the merge publication requirement that the Subscriber SQL version be <= the version of the publisher.

Does anyone out there have any thoughts how I could do a staged migration of the clients?
