Business intelligence system

  • Hi

I am a junior data analyst trying to apply for a new position , I got an interview for this coming Monday. I have to do a presentation on the interview

Topic: design a bi system for 500 inspectors that will be using tablets

i am the BI company that will be designing the system for another company

Please help how do i go about doing that

  • At the risk of being a little sarcastic, if you're not sure how to get started on the problem, I'd say the employer is probably looking for someone with more experience.

  • We can't tell you how YOU would go about doing that, only how WE would go about doing that.

The employer doesn't want to know how WE would do it.

  • then How would you go about doing it, I need an idea I know that the employer want someone with more experience but I need that job...Please help

  • The first thing I would do is ask a bunch of questions:

    1. Who are the stakeholders for the BI output?

    2. What do they think the system should produce?

    3. Are we looking at dashboards, KPI indicators, detail reports, drill-down reports...what do they want? Web-based, email distribution, self-serve?

    4. What BI platform(s) are already in use? Do you want to build on those or start afresh?

    5. What is the size and composition of the BI development team that will be available for the project?

    6. Who makes the tablets? Have you chosen software to capture data from the tablet users in a database or some other place?

    7. What is the budget for the project?

    8. Make of buy the solution?

Depending on the answers I receive, I'd probably have a bunch more questions. Then, I'd want to interview each stakeholder and BI-system user to thoroughly understand their expectations.

This would all lead up to a composite picture I can use as a starting point. Next steps would include:

    1. software options for the tablets and the BI system

    2. prototyping a few good options to see how things work together

    3. selecting a winning combination and build and run a pilot project

    4. If we get here (we may not!) it's time to design a comprehensive solution using the knowledge gained so far.

Note that, without all the preliminary steps, it just isn't possible to design such a system. Nothing like that gets designed in a vacuum.

  • thank you this is the kind of a step I needed
