That said, today in 2014 (and ever since the mid-1990's), there are much better options than MS Access if you're looking for a platform to develope multi-user line of business applications or data marts. In that arena, Access struggles and fails.I'm interested in hearing these alternatives.
OK, what I asserted above is: There have been better alternatives to MS Access for developing "multi-user line of business applications and data marts" since the mid-1990s.
There are way to many to mention, so I'll just mention the Microsoft stack.
multi-user line of business applcations: Visual Basic (superceeded by .NET), ASP.NET, SharePoint, Model Microsoft Dynamics CRM
multi-user data marts: SQL Server, Analysis Services cubes, SSRS, SharePoint
All of which are not as fast or cheap to deploy solutions to end users who want a multifunctional gui, or the alternatives have some sort of major limitation. Lightswitch had promise but still has some serious limitations. I really would like an alternative.
