OPENXML vs XQuery

  • This question pertains to SQL versions 2008 and higher - which provides better performance for parsing/reading a XML data type, OPENXML or XQuery? Are there instances where one is preferred over the other? I've used both and haven't come up with any conclusion yet.

    Thanks

I wouldn't take anyone's word on the internet for such a thing. It depends on their personal experience and requirements for each. My recommendation would be to setup a couple of tests and measure for yourself.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
