Misery loves company, I am glad to see that I am not the only person struggling with this issue. We do not allow direct Microsoft updating, but a security team puts together a list of "relevant" patches. Unfortunately, this security team is not aware of all applications in my environment (I work in a large, geographically and technically disparate enterprise environment). I am frequently hit with patches breaking all manner of data driven applications in a variety of ways. Compounding my issue, is that the patches never come alone, they come in groups containing sometimes as many as 20 or 30 individual patches. So, I then have to figure out what patch out of the group caused the issue and then how, and if, it can be mitigated (other than just removing the patch). Finding that needle in the haystack can be a non trivial task. The last issue I had was a KB patch to prevent "remote execution of code through USB..". This USB patch prevented users from using windows authentication for one application on an IIS web server. Job security? Ugh, no, patchwork insanity.
