    Basically the equivalent of yanking the power cord, so that may have caused this originally.

    Unlikely. SQL is quite capable of handling a hard shutdown. Something has gone and written 00000000 over a several large chunks of the data files, it's not half-completed IOs which is about the worst that a hard shutdown can cause.

    It's at least plausible that the IO subsystem problems were causing the VM issues though.
