Downsides of running 2012 MSX with a mix of 2012 and 2008R2 TSX's? Is it supported?

  • Per this TechNet article, older version TSX is not supported with a more recent version of MSX. However, I have some running, and I can't see a lot of downside. Is it only in SSIS packages, etc? Ideally as we migrate to 2012, I would like to move all servers up front to the 2012 MSX. However, Microsoft seems to be recommending running 2 separate MSX servers. Any thoughts or experiences? Is this flatout not supported by MS?

  • I have been running a 2012 MSX with TSX servers going back to SQL 2005 without issue. The main problem I have found is that some of my custom jobs needed to be tweaked since the system views changed a bit in 2012 (i.e sys.dm_os_memory_clerks). I am not using SSIS or Maintenance Plans though.
