Database mirroring

  • Dear All,

I have to take a mirrored database 'offline' but I would need to bring them back on line at some point. Is the best practice to remove the mirroring and recreate them again? If thats the case, the mirrored database would be in a 'Restoring' state therefore; would I have to delete the database which is 'restoring' and do a new backup then recreate the mirroring please?

    Thanks in advance!

  • I do not think mirrored database can be taken offline. Depending on what maintenance work you will do, you need to reconfigure it later.

  • why you want to take database offline, want to carry out any specific activities.

  • Thank you for your reply! I want to do some work on the database then restart the mirroring.

  • A mirrored DB can't be taken offline, so you would have to break the mirror and then recreate it after you are done with the your work. What work are you doing that you don't want mirrored?

  • Just curious, what work are you doing that requires it to be taken offline? You can reboot the active node in a mirrored relationship and assuming nothing breaks during reboots (s*it happens) the partner will synchronize.

Are you planning to take the actual mirror server down or you mean take the mirror db offline?

If you mean the mirror server, it can be down without breaking the mirroring.

Let me know what exactly you are planning to do.
