SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition
Clean install on laptop, no previous versions of SQL Server
Absolute pain in the nether regions to install and still not functioning properly so gave it some time and came back to it this morning and SQL Server Management Studio will not open as "Evaluation Period has expired"
How do I fix this?
Where can I get guidance on installing 2012 as most of the BI components are non functional

added the product key and now I think its trying to upgrade although taking a long time.

You didn't install Developer edition, but Evaluation edition.
With Developer edition you don't need to supply a license key.

I should never have posted the question as within minutes I had realised what had happened.
SQL Server seems to be up and running
SSAS we have another error now:
"unable to establish server mode" This is to connect to a multidimensional instance of SSAS and I have never come across this before.

Sure? When I installed my version of SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition I had to enter a product key.

If you are like me and fly through on first install it is possible to get up and running with by clicking next and it takes the default of evaluation.
That's the trouble I get by installing too quickly.

My license key is already filled in when I run the setup of Developer Edition. Maybe because mine was downloaded from MSDN (I think?).

Yes mine was not downloaded it came on DVD

Mine is on a DVD as well.

On the way through installing there is section where you can type in the product key. However by default the radio button is ticked for evaluation. Obviously I was in go like crazy mode and clicked NEXT without thinking that in 180 days I would need to come back and sort this out.
That will teach me for trying to install stuff too quickly. Still having issues with SSAS (driving me mad)

I've installed SQL Server 2008 R2 and 2012 using install sets from different sources and I've noticed that some have the product key already entered and some are blank and default to Evaluation.
The lesson I've learned is NEVER click Next, Next, Next. Always read each screen and make sure all selections are deliberately choosen. There are some good tutorials on installing SQL that explain what each selection option means.

I didn't. Varies by which dev edition you have.

I have to admit every version now seems to be harder than the previous to install and comes with more options and selections.
