windows os support for sql 2008 and sql 2012

    The requirements are at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506%28v=SQL.105%29.aspx.

    I know people who are running a local instance on their Win7 desktops, but I don't know about official support.

    You should be using Developer Edition for a dev server. Enterprise is probably running unlicensed there, or you're paying a ridiculous amount of money that you don't need to pay.

  • It's falls under MSDN, which allows us unlimited editions of ent/standard on non-production servers.
