  • What's DOA?

  • Nice question, learned something. Thanks.

+1 I almost picked DOA for giggles. I don't know why, but that just made me laugh this morning. πŸ˜€

    Everything is awesome!

  • answered this just to find out if DOA did mean dead on arrival (or Database Out of Action)

  • Sorry to my international colleagues that do not understand DOA.

Somethings said locally, may not be understood in other parts. We joke that the server is DOA, when delivered to be fixed.

  • My guess was Single User because I was thinking read only would still be logging. I guess not.

    Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

  • I didn't know the answer to this but thought 'read only' the most likely answer. DoA looked to be a joke and the other two seemed unnecessarily restrictive given that I couldn't see any reason why one shouldn't be able to read data without a log file.

  • Out of curiosity, I wonder how many people have had this happen to them.

Is the answer rate indicative of experience with this error or do people know this without having experienced it?

I've recently seen it in two different circumstances:

    (a) lack of free space on the underlying disk volume; and

    (b) autogrowth restriction.

Both situations related to the same database, and both were caused by the same application. Since that application was written to log the INSERTs it could not perform, I wrote a simple script to extract those INSERTs from the log file and redo them after circumstance (a) occurred. A little while later, circumstance (b) occurred, and I had the script in hand, ready to run :-).
