Trying to remove SQL 2008 R2, getting a dialog about needing to access core_shared.msi

  • I'm trying to remove SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition from my developer machine, in preparation for installing SQL Server 2012. Right now I'm stuck with a dialog box that says:

"SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Database Engine Shared

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removeable disk that is not available.

Insert the 'SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Database Engine Shared' disk and click OK."

I've tried looking for that DVD, but can't find one with that label on it. I've tried looking at every MSDN DVD that I've got, but am coming up with nothing. I'm not sure where this is. The only options the popup dialog box gives me is OK or Cancel. OK would mean that I believe I've found the core_shared.msi file, but since I haven't it will fail. That leaves me with Cancel. I'm hoping that doesn't completely cancel the uninstall. At this point all I can do is hit the Cancel button and hope for the best. I'd love to know what will happen, if it leaves this "SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Database Engine Shared" component behind?

  • Just an addendum, the more I think about this, the less I think that I actually had a disk for service pack 1 for SQL Server 2008 R2. I believe I ran it off of the Microsoft website.

Still, I'd like to know if this will cause me any problems, having to cancel out of that last dialog box?

  • I do have also same problem. I am trying to uninstall service pack 2 for 2008R2 instance but it is showing select the CD-ROM

  • I got the one temporary solution. Just cancel each time when it asks for CD finally it shows update uninstalled successfully but if you go to ssms and check the productlevel, it will give the previous servicepacks.
