Combine CASE for Boolean (is NULL) and Expression

  • Hi,

I just thinking how to make my code more readable, I need to check C1 for is NULL and for nothing '', I learned that syntax is different

For now I came up with nested CASE

CASE when C1 is NULL then 'Alpha'

    else

CASE C1 when '' then 'Bravo'

    C1 when 'c' then 'Charlie'

    else 'Whiskey'

    end

    end

Is there any other way to make it more structural.

  • Like this?

CASE WHEN C1 IS NULL THEN 'Alpha'

    WHEN C1='' THEN 'Bravo'

    WHEN C1='c' THEN 'Charlie'

    ELSE 'Whiskey' END

My mantra: No loops! No CURSORs! No RBAR! Hoo-uh![/I]

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

    My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.
