Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a MSAcess viewer (runtime) that can be used to open a Web database?
I know it can be done with a regular MS Access database but so far I can't get it to work with a web database and I don't have a sharepoint server that I can publish it to.
This is just to demo a POC to a customer before the back end is created in SQL server and the front end developed as a website.

It is possible to view what is called a "hybrid" web database using SQL Azure using an Access front-end, so you could try using the 2013 runtime in that mode. But if you are running SQL Server on a web server, then Access isn't a very satisfactory tool. If you want to pursue the SQL Azure approach, post back.

At the moment no SQL server development has been done a d if they agree with the POC we will then pursue creating the entire database within the customers data centre and utilise there existing infrastructure for the front ends. Azure will not be used in this case.
The access db was put together quickly to demonstrate the rough feel of the app.
Ill need to look into the runtime you mention. Basically I am trying to save just performing a demo via webex or equivalent and letting the client play with the POC.

We've done a number of demos of that type using either remote desktop or LogMeIn using Access and actually let them play with the prototype and make suggestions, and it worked pretty well. We had a single PC dedicated to that sort of thing. One of the challenges in your case is to make the Access prototype have the look and feel of a web app - it's very easy to implement functions in Access that are either very difficult or impossible to implement in a web app.

Giving them access to a hosted VM may be an option as we will not allow any sort of remote access into our network due to some of the sensitive projects we have.
The forms are pretty basic so far in terms of functionality, if they want to go ahead all reporting will be SSRS reports, the only reason for MSAccess at this stage is the development time to create the DB and visual interface is significantly less than the equivalent POC in SQL sever with a java or c# front end.
I have been looking into the ms hosted sharepoint option as its very cost effective solution to publish the db on the web but time consuming to setup the sharepoint server. But once done we can use it to share other POC's.
