What Backup Solution Do You Use?

  • It has been a while since I did this research so I have been re-researching the available SQL Server backup solutions and I was just wondering what the SSC community uses for for their backup/recovery needs. Gotta make a proposal soon so I'm looking everywhere. So tell me, if you are using something other than the native SQL Server backup solution, let me know what it is and why. I'm also interested in any opinions on the different products.

I look forward to hearing from you!

    Thanks!

  • I use Idera SQL Safe for our company's backup solution, if you are looking for a solution with multiple servers they will really work with you on the price/server (comparable to Red Gate's cost) but in my testing I've done Idera's compression ratio is faster and more compressed than HyperBac and the GUI is quite user friendly. If you also purchase the Virtual restore software you can really do some cool stuff with it.

If you're shopping around I would look at both of these options before making a decision.

  • In the past I have used Microsoft Data Protection Manager (DPM) for organisational backups in general. It has a (IMHO) a great interface for backing up SQL Servers, allows restoration to different boxes (for testing as an example) and has the ability to restore to point-in-time.

At the moment we are using BackupExec from Symantec but I am not altogether impressed with it. Or it may be that the guy using it isn't soooo clued up on how it works but it wouldn't be my first choice.
