Ring Buffers Memory Broker explanation required

  • Hi everyone,

I'm looking at this ring buffer at the moment and i have a few questions about the details of the data being returned. I've tried to find out online however it seems little information is available.

    1. Pool, this is the resource governor pool i assume. what do the numbers correspond to? i.e. is Pool = 1 the internal resource pool or the default, or somethign else?

    2. MemoryRatio - ratio of what?

    3. NewTarget - what is this?

    4. Overall - is this the overall memory allocated to sql?

    5. Rate - what is this?

    6. CurrentlyPredicted - what is this?

    7. CurrentlyAllocated - what is this?

    Thanks

    S

  • Can anyone help me on this???

  • Hi Toby,

In case it makes you feel any better I'm in exactly the same situation. I've found a fair bit of info now about the RING_BUFFER_RESOURCE_MONITOR output, but there is virtually nothing out there that explains how to interpret the output for the RING_BUFFER_MEMORY_BROKER data. There are several references that advise on how to query the buffer, and lots that say that it exists, but that's only the first step. I don't even know what units many of these values are intended to be read as. The problem is, these are undocumented DMVs, so Microsoft aren't obliged to provide much info at all. We have to rely on the good will of those close to the internals team to blog about it, and currently there seems to be very little (if anything) about the finer detail of this particular data available.

If I find out, I'll let you know!

  • Hmmm - just noticed that the original thread was started in 2012, not 2013! Ho hum. Still, nothing seems to have changed much ...
