Novell Groupwise and Notifications

  • Has anyone had any luck setting up notifications (alerts, etc.) with their email client being Novell Groupwise?  And if so, can you shed some light on how to do this??  Thanks!!

  • We have GroupWise, but I've not even wanted to go about installing a GroupWise client on SQL Server server. I've seen some posts here about using SMTP (vendor neutral) to send Email Alerts, but have not implemented it for SQL Server. We've converted all PC (desktop) apps from GroupWise APIs to SMTP to remain vendor neutral & isolate apps from E-mail Server upgrades/changes.

Sorry couldn't be of more help.

  • I had this working for about a year.  I set up SQL mail with outlook installed on the SQL Server as the email client.  I set up an email account in groupwise for the account that runs the SQL Service.  Not the LocalSystem account.   Has to have the same name and password for the service as the email account.  I then had the new groupwise account forward mail to my email account.  I also set up the new Groupwise account so that I could proxy to it from my groupwise client.  I worked quite well.

    Good luck

  • This is my first post here, but I thought I might be able to help.  We use GroupWise and SQL Server with little to no problems.  I am able to send SQL messages, Access/CDONTS/CDOEXCH, or anything else that can generate SMTP messages.

For GroupWise to work with the Internet, there is a portion of the system called the GWIA, GroupWise Internet....something   This service acts as the SMTP, IMAP, POP, etc. gateway for GroupWise.  IMAP and POP are not required for this to work, only the SMTP portion.

I just follow the standard rules for setting up an account for the SQL Agent Service, login as that account and setup Outlook 2000 (some later versions don't work with SQL Agent) with a profile for this account.

The profile includes the IP Address/DNS name of the GWIA server as both the POP server(incoming) and SMTP(outgoing) server.  If you all you are doing is sending mail from the Agent, don't worry about the login information.  Also for sending mail you do not have to worry about the authentication information in e-mail account setup, or the POP service on the server.  The POP line and return address line in the profile must be populated with something to make Outlook happy even when they are not used for receiving.

The GroupWise client does not have to be installed on the server, and an account does not have to be created in GroupWise.  The only account required on the GroupWise server is the receipient for the alerts and other messages.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks to everyone for their responses!  We did have to setup Outlook to get this working!

    Again, thanks!
